(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Barry Zito will try to extend his excellent pitching
efforts as of late for the Giants tonight when San Francisco plays the second
contest of its three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at AT&T Park.
Zito is pitching to a 1.24 earned run average over his last four starts,
though he is just 1-0 over that span, having bested Florida on August 17
before posting three straight no-decisions.
That includes Sunday at Washington when Zito held the Nationals to one run on
two hits with five strikeouts over seven innings of work. The Giants went on
to lose 2-1, however.
The left-hander defeated the Dodgers on August 2 and is 2-1 with a 4.72 ERA in
four career starts versus the club.
David Wells will make his third start of the year for the Dodgers this
afternoon. After winning his LA debut on August 26 in New York, Wells took a
no-decision against his former club, the Padres, last Friday after allowing
three runs and six hits over five innings.
Wells then dropped his appeal of a seven-game suspension he received while
with San Diego for an animated argument with an umpire back in July, missing a
start.
The left-hander, who has yet to make a home start with the Dodgers, is a
combined 6-8 with a 5.46 ERA in 24 starts with Los Angeles and San Diego.
Wells has faced the Giants eight times in his career and is 2-2 with a 4.06
ERA. He last faced them on June 26 with the Padres and got a no-decision
despite six innings of one-run ball.
The Giants took the opener of this series on Friday after Daniel Ortmeier
clubbed a game-winning, solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift
his club to the 5-4 victory.
The victory halted an 11-game home losing streak by the Giants to the Dodgers.
Ortmeier's homer came after Brad Hennessey allowed a long ball to James Loney
in the top of the ninth that tied the game at four. Hennessey (3-4) picked up
the win despite blowing his fourth save.
The Giants scored four times over the final three innings, and also got a solo
homer from Bengie Molina en route to winning their second straight game.
Loney homered twice, while Juan Pierre had a pair of hits and scored two runs
for the Dodgers, who have dropped two of their last three games but remained 2
1/2 games back of San Diego in the wild card standings.
LA is also 4 1/2 games behind the National League West-leading Diamondbacks.
Nomar Garciaparra returned to the lineup for the Dodgers, three days after
coming off the 15-day disabled list. Garciaparra, who was out due to a
strained left calf, went 0-for-4.
Los Angeles is still 6-1 versus San Francisco at AT&T Park this year and 20-12
versus the Giants over the last two seasons.
