Willingham, Marlins top Mets
Baseball Betting Lines
05/02/2007 -
Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Josh Willingham hit a three-run triple and a
two-run homer for a career-high five runs batted in and the Florida Marlins
defeated the New York Mets, 5-2, at Shea Stadium.
Willingham ended 2-for-4 and was the only Marlin with more than one hit, as
Florida has won the first two games of this three-game set.
Florida starter Ricky Nolasco (1-0) was activated off the disabled list prior
to the game and picked up the win. The right-hander, who was sidelined since
April 7 with elbow inflammation, allowed one run on six hits, striking out
five without a walk in five innings of work.
David Wright broke out of his prolonged slump, going 3-for-4 with his first
homer of the season, for the Mets, who have lost four of six and fell to 6-7
at home this season. Carlos Delgado added two hits and an RBI for New York,
which lost its third series of the year but first to a team other than the
Atlanta Braves.
New York rookie starter Mike Pelfrey (0-3) struggled in the first inning, but
settled down after that, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out three
and walking three over a career-high 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander suffered
his third straight loss despite putting together his best start.
The Marlins got going in the first inning, taking advantage of the early
woes of Pelfrey. With one out, Pelfrey hit Dan Uggla with a pitch and then
walked Miguel Cabrera and Mike Jacobs before yielding a triple to Willingham
that made it a 3-0 game.
New York threatened in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on the
corners with no outs, but Carlos Beltran struck out and an unconventional
strike'em-out throw'em-out double-play ended the inning. On strike three to
Delgado, Wright stole second with the throw going through to shortstop Hanley
Ramirez. However, Ramirez immediately threw the ball back to catcher Miguel
Olivo, who easily tagged out Jose Reyes at the plate for the final out.
Wright got the Mets on the board in the fourth, hitting his first homer of the
season to make it a two-run contest. Later in the frame, the Mets had their
second runner thrown out at the plate to end an inning in the game when
Alfredo Amezaga gunned down Delgado after Paul Lo Duca singled to center.
The Mets got another run in the sixth as Wright started the inning with a
double, moved to third on a Beltran ground out and scored on Delgado's base
hit.
Willingham, though, put the game out of reach in the eighth, hitting a two-run
homer off reliever Aaron Heilman, and Henry Owens worked out of trouble in the
ninth for his third save of the year.

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Bet on NFL Football
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.

Big 12 Conference betting odds
Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.
Work left to do:
Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.
Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.
Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
