Williams agrees to extension with North Carolina

Chapel Hill, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The University of North Carolina and men's
head basketball coach Roy Williams agreed to a four-year contract extension on
Thursday.
The new deal will keep Williams in Chapel Hill through the 2014-2015 season
and includes an annual base salary of $325,000 and $30,000 for expenses, plus
supplemental income paid by the university that will range from $1.2 million
to $1.5 million per year.
Williams, who will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
Fame this September, has compiled a 106-30 record in four seasons with the
school, and won the 2005 national championship.
"Roy Williams is the most complete coach in the country," said director of
athletics Dick Baddour. "I knew when we hired him he was an outstanding
basketball coach, but he has also exceeded our every expectation in the manner
in which he runs a basketball program. He believes in character first, he
coaches for all the right reasons and he is a first-rate ambassador of our
university. We are proud to call him our coach and pleased to extend his
contract for another four seasons."
This past season, Williams guided the Tar Heels to a 31-7 record as well as a
share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title. UNC also won the
ACC Tournament and moved on to the East Regional finals in the NCAA
Tournament.
Williams, who originally signed an eight-year deal in 2003-04, is 524-131 in
19 seasons as a head coach with Kansas and North Carolina.
"The confidence Chancellor Moeser and Dick Baddour have shown in me by
offering this extension is flattering," said Williams. "I am excited about
coaching at Carolina and look forward to these next eight years."

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
