Wang, Matsui help Yankees earn doubleheader split

yielding just one run, and Hideki Matsui went 3-for-5 with four RBI as the New York Yankees secured a doubleheader split with an 8-1 win at U.S. Cellular
Field.
John Danks gave up just two runs to help the White Sox to a 5-3 victory in
the opener of the twinbill.
This series was originally slated to get underway on Tuesday, but rain caused
a postponement last night making the doubleheader necessary.
Wang (2-3) scattered six hits, while walking one and striking out three. Kyle
Farnsworth walked two in the eighth before retiring the side and Mariano
Rivera pitched the ninth for New York.
Melky Cabrera and Jorge Posada homered for the Yankees, who had lost four of
five coming in.
Chicago starter Jose Contreras (3-4) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs
-- two earned -- on five hits, while walking three and striking out six.
Andrew Sisco surrendered four runs in the ninth for the White Sox, who had won
five of their previous six games.
The Yankees got out to a 2-0 lead in the third with two unearned runs. Derek
Jeter reached on a one-out fielding error by Juan Uribe and advanced to second
when Jason Giambi walked. After Alex Rodriguez lined out to third, Matsui
doubled over the head of center fielder Darin Erstad, scoring Jeter and
Giambi.
Chicago cut the margin to 2-1 in the sixth. Rob Mackowiak singled up the
middle, bringing home Erstad, but the Yankees escaped further damage in the
inning as Cabrera fired to third base, with Alex Rodriguez tagging out Pablo
Ozuna for the final out.
The Yankees scored two more in the seventh. Bobby Abreu hit a two-out RBI
single and Jeter followed with an RBI triple to right center, putting New
York, ahead 4-0.
Solo homers by Cabrera and Posada, and a two-run single by Matsui in the ninth
capped the scoring.

New York agreed to terms with pitcher Pete Walker on a minor league contract
prior to the game...New York, which despite a pay roll of over $200 million is
a mediocre 18-20 through its first 38 contests and currently trails the hated
Boston Red Sox by eight games for first place in the AL East...Chicago is now
19-17 and four games behind Detroit in the AL Central...The Yankees had scored
only 13 total runs over their previous five contests...The game was preceded
by a rain delay of one hour and 15 minutes...The Chicago White Sox reinstated
infielder Alex Cintron from the bereavement list and optioned infielder
Andy Gonzalez to Triple-A Charlotte prior to the game...Posada extended
