Red Wings trade for Bertuzzi

Detroit, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Detroit Red Wings made some noise prior to
Tuesday's trade deadline, acquiring powerful forward Todd Bertuzzi from the
Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Shawn Matthias and two conditional
draft picks.
The Red Wings will have to give up a pick in the 2007 and '08 drafts if they
sign Bertuzzi after this season.
The 32-year-old Bertuzzi was traded to Florida from Vancouver last summer in
the deal that sent goaltender Roberto Luongo to the Canucks. The 6-foot-3,
245-pound forward had a disappointing year with the Panthers, playing in just
seven games and recording one goal and six assists.
Bertuzzi has battled a herniated disk this year and hasn't played since
October 18.
A first-round pick (23rd overall) by the Islanders in the 1993 draft,
Bertuzzi's best years came while playing with Vancouver. He notched 70-plus
points three times with the Canucks and his best season came in 2002-03, when
Bertuzzi posted career-highs in goals (46), assists (51) and games played
(82).
The Sudbury, Ontario native has 536 points (224 goals, 312 assists) in 717
career games with the Isles, Canucks and Panthers.
However, Bertuzzi will likely always be best-remembered for the incident with
Colorado's Steve Moore in March of 2004. Bertuzzi, in an apparent retaliation
for a hit Moore delivered against Canucks captain Markus Naslund earlier in
the season, punched Moore from behind and drove him face-first into the ice.
Moore suffered three fractured neck vertebrae, facial cuts and a severe
concussion from the hit and hasn't played since. For his actions, Bertuzzi was
suspended for the final 13 games of the 2003-04 season and the playoffs.
The 19-year-old Matthias was a second-round selection by the Red Wings in the
2006 draft and is in his third season with the Belleville Bulls of the OHL.
In another deal on Tuesday, the Panthers traded defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski to
Pittsburgh for a fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft. Kwiatkowski has five
goals and five assists in 41 tests for Florida this year.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year
