Polanco boosts Tigers over Orioles

Detroit, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Placido Polanco went 4-for-5 and drove in two
runs, including the game-winner in the eighth inning, as the Detroit Tigers
downed the Baltimore Orioles, 5-4, in the middle contest of a three-game set
at Comerica Park.
Craig Monroe hit a two-run home run and Sean Casey drove in a run for the
Tigers, who have won three straight.
Chad Durbin got the start, but was pulled after just 3 2/3 innings of work as
he was charged with two runs and three hits with six walks. Joel Zumaya (1-1)
got the win for striking out four batters over two shutout innings.
Brian Roberts went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three stolen bases and Miguel
Tejada drove in a pair of runs for the Orioles, who have dropped their past
three games and eight of nine.
Adam Loewen started on the mound for Baltimore and was charged with three runs
on seven hits in five innings. Danys Baez (0-1) got the loss for giving up two
runs in the eighth.
The scored was tied at 3-3 to start the bottom of the eighth, but the Tigers
plated two runners in the frame to assume the advantage.
Baez took over on the mound to start the inning and immediately got into
trouble as he gave up a lead-off walk to pinch-hitter Carlos Guillen. Brandon
Inge moved up Guillen with a sacrifice bunt. Curtis Granderson was then
intentionally walked and Casey followed by plunking a pinch-hit single to
left to score Guillen. Baez struck out Ivan Rodriguez for the second out of
the inning, but the Tigers got some insurance when Polanco beat out an infield
single to score Granderson.
The extra run proved fortunate as Tejada's groundout plated Roberts and Nick
Markakis represented the tying run on third, but Todd Jones got Aubrey Huff to
pop out to short to end the game and pick up his ninth save of the season.
Baltimore took the lead in the third with a pair of runs. Melvin Mora led off
the frame with a shot over the left field wall. Markakis then drew a walk and
Tejada followed with a single. Huff hit a soft grounder to first that moved
the runners up and Ramon Hernandez hit a grounder to short that scored
Markakis for a 2-0 lead.
Detroit, though, used a three-run fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Rodriguez
led off the frame with a double to center and scored when Polanco followed
with a single. Gary Sheffield and Magglio Ordonez then flied out, but Monroe
gave Detroit the lead when he blasted a pitch over the left field wall.
The Orioles evened the game in the seventh inning as Tejada's one-out single
scored Mora.
Game Notes
Both of Monroe's home runs this season have been against Baltimore...Roberts
is 11-for-12 in base stealing this season and Baltimore is 18-for-20
overall...Mora has five home runs on the season...Detroit has won seven of its
last 10 games against Baltimore.
