Ichiro shines, Felix returns as M's down Angels

Seattle, WA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ichiro Suzuki went 5-for-5 with an RBI and a
run scored as the Seattle Mariners trounced the LA Angels of Anaheim, 11-3, in
the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field.
Bolstered by the return of Felix Hernandez, the Mariners pounded out 14 hits
and put 10 runs on the board by the end of the fourth inning. Jose Lopez and
Kenji Johjima both homered for Seattle, which has won three of its last four
games.
The 21-year-old Hernandez, who returned from a stint on the disabled list with
a right forearm strain, yielded three runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings
of work. He walked three batters, struck out five and departed after 78
pitches, 45 for strikes. Sean White (1-0) earned his first career win after he
tossed 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
"It was probably a little better than I anticipated," Seattle manager Mike
Hargrove said of Hernandez's start. "I think he knew he had a 75 pitch limit
and was trying to get to five innings once we scored those runs and got a
little anxious and got out of his game. The big thing about Felix tonight is
that he didn't feel anything on any pitches, he felt healthy and strong, and
that's good."
Orlando Cabrera went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Angels, who have dropped
two of three. Kelvim Escobar (4-2) allowed eight runs -- six earned -- in 2
1/3 innings, his shortest outing since July 13, 2003, when he pitched for the
Toronto Blue Jays.
"It wasn't a good night for me," Escobar said. "I didn't get ahead and I
wasn't able to execute good pitches at times. They just got me. It was one of
those games."
The Mariners jumped on Escobar for three runs in the first inning. Suzuki and
Jose Vidro ripped back-to-back singles, and three batters later, Jose
Guillen's base hit made it 1-0. Adrian Beltre reached on a throwing error
by third baseman Chone Figgins, plating Vidro, and a wild pitch scored
Guillen.
The Angels got one back in the third, as Casey Kotchman's bases-loaded line
drive deflected off the glove of Hernandez, scoring Figgins from third.
Seattle answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame, chasing a stunned
Escobar. Raul Ibanez reached second on an error, moved to third on a wild
pitch and Richie Sexson walked to put runners at the corners. Guillen's double
scored Ibanez, Beltre's hit scored Sexson, and Johjima's sacrifice fly plated
Guillen. Beltre stole third and scored on Yuniesky Betancourt's single,
chasing Escobar, and Lopez greeted Hector Carrasco with a two-run homer to
make it 9-1.
Hernandez's night ended in the fourth, as Cabrera's two-run single cut it to
9-3. White came on, retiring Gary Matthews to end the inning, and the Mariners
tacked on another run in their turn at the plate when Johjima homered to left
for a 10-3 advantage.
Suzuki continued to swing a hot bat, driving in Lopez with a single to right
in the seventh.
Game Notes
Suzuki has had five hits in one game six times in his career...Vladimir
Guerrero was given the night off for Los Angeles...The Mariners activated
right-hander Jason Davis prior the game and optioned lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith
to Triple-A Tacoma...Seattle also optioned pitcher Sean Green to Tacoma to
make room for Hernandez on the roster...It was just the third win for the
Mariners in their last 14 games against the Angels.
