Griffey homers in 12th to lift Reds over Padres

San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ken Griffey's 12th-inning solo home run sent
Cincinnati past San Diego, 2-1, in the second of three games between the teams
at Petco Park.
Leading off the inning against Heath Bell (0-2), Griffey smacked a belt-high
offering over the wall in right to put the Reds ahead 2-1. It was his 571st
career blast, moving him within two of Harmon Killebrew for eighth on the all-
time list.
"He's a very good pitcher," Griffey said of Bell. "I was able to get a pitch I
could hit, and I hit it."
David Weathers (1-2), who hurled three innings of perfect relief, retired the
Padres in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the victory.
Ryan Freel had an RBI double, and Brandon Phillips was 2-for-5 for the Reds,
who snapped a four-game losing streak. Jeff Conine had three hits, and Chad
Moeller scored a run in the win.
Geoff Blum singled and scored for the Padres, who saw their two-game win
streak come to an end. Mike Cameron picked up the only other hit of the game.
"They made pitches," said Padres manager Bud Black. "We couldn't break
through. They pitched well."
It was a pitchers duel throughout, as Reds starter Aaron Harang gave up two
hits and one run over nine innings, fanning seven and walking four in his
strongest outing of the season despite a no-decision. David Wells went eight
innings in the start for San Diego, scattering seven hits and one run,
striking out five.
Cincinnati pushed a run across in the sixth, as Freel doubled home Moeller
with one out. Josh Hamilton led off the frame with a single and Moeller
followed with a base hit. Harang then grounded into a force at third to set
up Freel's RBI.
Blum picked up the Pads' second hit of the game with one out in the eighth, a
double to the gap in right-center. Marcus Giles walked, and Jose Cruz moved
both runners up. Blum scored to tie the game when Harang stumbled into his
motion and balked, but Brian Giles grounded out to end the inning.
"It's just one of those fluke things, and I figure it'll be on some
highlight films forever," Harang said of the gaffe.
Game Notes
Padres pitchers had gone 102 innings without allowing a home run before
Griffey's blast...Cincinnati improved to 2-2 in extra innings, while
San Diego fell to 3-3...The Reds also broke a six-game losing streak on
the road...Immediately prior to the game, Cincinnati recalled pitcher
Marcus McBeth and selected Moeller's contract from Triple-A Louisville.
They will take the roster spots of infielder Jeff Keppinger and pitcher
Bobby Livingston, both optioned to Louisville on Monday...Time of game was

Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.
Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.
Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.
That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.
Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.
