Fenway Park the site for two between Red Sox, Tigers
Baseball Betting Lines
05/17/2007 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - With heavy rains having washed out Wednesday's scheduled
contest, the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers will get together for a
day/night doubleheader at Fenway Park beginning this afternoon.
These current division leaders have split the first two meetings of this four-
game series, with the Red Sox claiming Monday's opener by a 7-1 count and
Detroit rebounding on Tuesday behind an outstanding performance from Justin
Verlander. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year gave up six hits and two runs
over 7 2/3 innings to lead the Tigers to a 7-2 decision.
Verlander (4-1) struck out seven and did not walk a batter before turning the
game over to Fernando Rodney, who held the Red Sox scoreless over the final 1
1/3 frames.
Brandon Inge was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run
shot for the Tigers, who halted a two-game slide and have won four of six.
Ivan Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and scored a run in the victory.
Boston's Tim Wakefield (4-4), who entered the game with an AL-best 1.79 ERA,
yielded nine hits and five runs in seven-plus innings.
Kevin Youkilis hit his fourth homer of the season and scored both runs for the
Red Sox, who had won three straight and 10 of 12 coming in.
J.D. Drew added an RBI single for Boston before leaving in the eighth inning
with a back injury. The oft-injured right-fielder's status for today's games
is in question.
Detroit will call up Zach Miner from Triple-A Toledo to start today's opener.
The right-hander will be filling in for Mike Maroth, who was slated to pitch
last night's game but was scratched because of illness.
Miner made 27 appearances and started 16 times for the Tigers last season and
compiled a 7-6 record with a 4.84 earned run average. The 25-year-old could
not win a spot on the major-league roster during the spring and has struggled
in eight games (seven starts) with Toledo so far this season, going 0-4 with a
5.57 ERA over 42 innings.
In his lone career outing against Boston, Miner took a loss after giving up
three runs on seven hits over four innings in his major-league debut last
June.
Miner will be going up against the weakest link of Boston's formidable
rotation this evening. Julian Tavarez has lost four of his first five
decisions to begin the year and enters tonight's tilt with a lackluster 6.60
ERA in six starts.
Tavarez has lost his last two starts, although he pitched well in a 2-1 loss
at Minnesota on May 5. In his most recent trip to the hill, the fiery
Dominican was roughed up for five runs (four earned) and 10 hits in five
innings of a 6-3 setback at home to Baltimore last Friday.
The veteran right-hander did hold the Twins to two runs and just four hits
while recording a season-high seven strikeouts over six innings in that May
5th loss.
Tavarez has faced Detroit nine times previously and owns a 2-0 record with a
5.11 ERA against the club. His only career start versus the Tigers came when
he was a member of the Chicago Cubs in 2001.
The Sox will turn to Curt Schilling in the nightcap, with the outspoken
veteran gunning for a fifth consecutive winning decision.
Schilling is 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA in seven starts since an Opening Day defeat
at Kansas City, although he struggled some in his most recent outing. The six-
time All-Star was touched for four runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings
against Baltimore on Saturday, and failed to receive a decision in Boston's
eventual 13-4 rout.
The 40-year-old has only beaten Detroit once in six career appearances (four
starts), owning a 1-3 record with a 5.14 ERA against tonight's opponent.
Schilling did hold the Tigers to four runs over 13 innings in a pair of starts
last season, both of which were no decisions.
Chad Durbin, who is proving to be a capable replacement for the injured Kenny
Rogers, gets the call for Detroit in game two. The journeyman right-hander
endured a rough first three starts of the season, but has turned things around
over the last month.
Durbin is 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA over his last four trips to the hill, with all
three of those victories coming on the road. He picked up another win last
Saturday by yielding just two runs over six innings against division-rival
Minnesota.
The 29-year-old is 1-0 despite a 9.39 ERA in three previous games, including
two starts, versus Boston. Durbin has not faced the Red Sox since throwing a 2
1/3-inning relief stint at Fenway Park on May 10, 2004.
These teams split six meetings a year ago, with Detroit winning two of three
in its lone visit to Fenway. The Tigers are just 4-8 in Boston since the start
of the 2004 season, however.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year
Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.
With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.
Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.
Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
