Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Greg Dobbs finished 2-for-3 with a solo
home run and an RBI triple, scoring twice as the Philadelphia Phillies routed
the Florida Marlins, 9-1, in the second of a three-game set.
John Ennis made his second career start, his first in more than five years,
for the Phillies. His first career start came in April, 2002, a four-inning
no-decision. This start was also a no-decision, in four-plus innings, but
Ennis rebounded from a leadoff home run by Hanley Ramirez to hold the Marlins
to six hits and just that one run, fanning five.
Four Phillies relievers held the Marlins to just three hits over the last five
innings, led by Clay Condrey (5-0) who allowed only a hit over 2 1/3 frames.
Chris Coste and Jimmy Rollins also homered for the Phillies, who had dropped
five of six entering the game.
Philadelphia pulled to within 2 1/2 games of San Diego for the NL wild card.
The Dodgers beat the Giants on Saturday to remain a half-game ahead of the
Phillies in the wild-card race, while San Diego faces Colorado on Saturday
night.
Rick Vanden Hurk (4-6) let up five hits and three runs in four innings for the
Marlins, who have dropped three of four. Ramirez's leadoff homer accounted for
the offense for the Marlins, who left eight runners on base.
Ennis settled down after Ramirez's leadoff blast to center, and the Phils took
the lead with three runs in the fourth. Dobbs lined a triple off the wall in
right-center, scoring one run, and Coste followed with a long fly ball to
left-center, a two-run shot that put Philadelphia on top, 3-1.
Dobbs' one-out homer in the sixth added another run for the Phils, and Chase
Utley's RBI single to right in the seventh gave the home team a 5-1 edge.
The Marlins squandered a first-and-third, one-out situation against shaky
reliever Tom Gordon in the eighth, as Josh Willingham took a called third
strike, and Mike Jacobs swung through strike three to end the threat. The
Phils then put the game away with four runs in the eighth.
Aaron Rowand lined a leadoff single to center, and came home on Abraham
Nunez's double to left. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Nunez came
home on Jayson Werth's single to left-center. Rollins followed with a blast to
right, handing the Phils an eight-run lead.
Game Notes
Rollins set a new career-high with his 26th homer of the season. He now has 81
RBI on the season, two shy of his career best...Ennis picked up his first
career hit on an infield single, a dribbling grounder to third with two outs
in the fourth. He is one of 10 rookie pitchers the Phillies have used this
season...Florida leads the season series, 9-8.
