Devils try to find road game, clinch playoff spot versus Habs
Hockey Betting Lines
03/27/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New Jersey Devils will try to punch their 13th straight
trip to the postseason tonight, and halt a four-game road slide as well, when
they visit the Montreal Canadiens and the Bell Centre.
The Devils enter tonight's test tied with the Penguins for first place in the
Atlantic Division with 91 points, though they have one more win and a game in
hand over the Pens. New Jersey can secure a playoff spot with a point tonight
or a loss by the Thrashers, who visit the Hurricanes this evening.
Home ice might be important for New Jersey, which hasn't missed the playoffs
since 1996. Though the Devils are 18-15-3 on the road this season, they have
dropped 13 of their last 15 as the guest.
New Jersey will play two straight and five of its next seven on the road after
a 1-1-1 homestand. The club lost for the third time in four games overall
Thursday night when it dropped a 4-3 shootout test to the New York Rangers.
Martin Brodeur made 28 saves, but allowed the game-tying goal with just 16.5
seconds left in regulation. Brodeur was then beaten by the Rangers' Erik
Christensen in the shootout's first round on a shot that hit off both the left
and right post before video replay confirmed it crossed the goal line.
"They scored some timely goals on us and it cost us," Jamie Langenbrunner
said. "They made a good play on the tying goal...We wanted to get the two
points, but we played well and got one point out of it."
Zach Parise, Patrick Elias and Travis Zajac all failed on their shootout
attempts for the Devils. Elias had a goal and an assist in regulation, while
Langenbrunner and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored. Kovalchuk now has seven goals
and 17 points in 18 games with the Devils and is two tallies shy of posting
his sixth straight 40-goal season.
Montreal won the opener of a three-game homestand on Thursday, besting
Florida, 4-1, to snap a 0-1-2 slide and win for the seventh time in its last
10 games.
Jaroslav Halak made 23 saves, losing his shutout bid with 3:36 to play, while
both Brian Gionta and Benoit Pouliot scored first-period goals. Gionta and
Tomas Plekanec added empty-net tallies to seal the win.
The game also saw a bit of controversy when Montreal's Jaroslav Spacek hit
Florida's David Booth with an open-ice, head-on-shoulder check early in the
second. No penalty was called on Spacek, but Booth had to be helped off the
ice before being taken to a Montreal hospital. The hit came on the same day
that the Hockey League Players Association gave its approval to the NHL's new
rule to prohibit hits to the head.
"I tried to step up on the blueline and he kind of got the puck on a long
pass," said Spacek. "He kind of turned and he was kind of low. When he turned,
I was right there. I tried to go low and away from him, but he hit me with a
high speed. I had good balance and I guess I hit him in a bad spot. I would
say it was a clean hit, he hit my shoulder as he was reaching for the pass and
reaching low."
The Habs were able to move two points ahead of the Flyers for the sixth spot
in the Eastern Conference, though Philadelphia has a game in hand. Montreal
also trails fifth-seeded Ottawa by three points in the standings.
Halak made 31 saves in Montreal's 3-1 win at New Jersey on Jan. 22 to help his
club snap a six-game series losing streak. The Habs have lost three straight
and seven of their last nine at home to the Devils as well.

With only 21 home runs standing between him and Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds is indeed planning on coming back for more in 2007. At least, that's what his agent told the Los Angeles Times.
"Barry's going to play in 2007," Jeff Borris of Beverly Hills Sports Council told the Times on Tuesday. "I've had many discussions with Barry and he's going to play. My intentions are to see to it he's in a big-league uniform next season. Those are my marching orders."

MySportsbook.com favors Bears, Bengals, Chargers and Colts to remain perfect
LAS VEGAS , Sept. 28 - Two big match-ups of undefeated teams have fans salivating at the Week Four schedule in the NFL. The Chicago Bears stifling defense looks to provide a less than hospitable welcome to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night in a battle of two 3-0 teams in the NFC conference. In the AFC, the San Diego Chargers (2-0) head to Maryland to face the surprising Baltimore Ravens (3-0) as both try to keep pace atop the conference standings. Betting Lines makers at MySportsbook.com, online sportsbook and casino, have set the Bears as 3.5 point favorites while the Chargers are a 2.5 point bet.
Of the three remaining undefeated teams, only one, New Orleans, enters this week's game as an underdog. Despite an emotional and resounding win over Atlanta on Monday night, the Saints are a 7.5 point underdog against the struggling Carolina Panthers. Indianapolis looks to stay perfect when they face the New York Jets as a 9 point road favorite while the Cincinnati Bengals are a 6 point favorite at home to the New England Patriots.
Six teams enter the week still looking for their first win, with a seventh, Tampa Bay, on a bye week. The prospect of dropping another game would not bode well for a potential playoff run. Since 1990, just three teams -- the 1992 Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions and 1998 Buffalo Bills -- have overcome losing their first three games of the season to earn a postseason berth. And only the Chargers managed to accomplish the feat after starting 0-4.
