08/23/2006 - CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -The last time Daunte Culpepper faced the Carolina Panthers, he was hauled off the field with three torn knee ligaments and his playing career in doubt. Culpepper returns to Bank of America Stadium on Thursday with a new team and renewed confidence as he tries to continue a successful comeback with the Miami Dolphins. Culpepper, traded from Minnesota to Miami in March, has completed 8 of 11 passes for 88 yards and no interceptions in two preseason games with the Dolphins. And the knee he had surgically repaired 10 months ago has held up so far. ``I've not looked at that part of it with any significance,'' Dolphins coach Nick Saban said on Culpepper's return to Carolina for the first time since the injury. ``I do think that him getting banged around a little bit last week is probably beneficial to him. Certainly, if that's something that's psychologically affecting him, that would be something that we would need to manage.'' Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowler, saw his career flash before him on the final play of the first quarter Oct. 30 when he was hit by Panthers cornerback Chris Gamble after an 18-yard run. ``I just remember hitting him and he was on the ground and hurting, but I didn't think it was bad,'' Gamble said Wednesday. Culpepper limped off the field, but was in tears in the locker room after the game as the extent of the damage became clear. The injury and his discontent in Minnesota fueled his offseason trade, and the Dolphins (1-1) have been pleased with his recovery. He led Miami on a 9-minute touchdown drive in last Saturday's win against Tampa Bay. But Carolina (2-0) will provide his the biggest test yet. The Panthers' first-team defense has allowed only three points in three quarters against Buffalo and Jacksonville. Carolina also has scored two defensive touchdowns: Ken Lucas' interception return against the Bills and Mike Rucker's fumble return against the Jaguars. ``We're winning 14-3 right now. We're happy about where we're at,'' said safety Mike Minter. The third preseason game is when the starters play the longest, and Saban said the first team will probably play into the third quarter against the Panthers. ``They are a good defense. This is a good team,'' Saban said. ``They have a good front. They have good secondary people. I think this is probably one of the best teams in the league overall.'' The Panthers are expected to play their starters into the third quarter, but Steve Smith won't be one of them for the third straight week. The All-Pro receiver missed 17 days of training camp with a strained left hamstring, and has been held out of practice this week with an ingrown toenail. Fellow receiver Keyshawn Johnson has made an immediate impact with Carolina. He had three catches for 38 yards last Saturday against Jacksonville and drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone that led to the Panthers' only first-team touchdown. ``Our receivers have done a pretty good job and Keyshawn's been picking it up,'' said quarterback Jake Delhomme, who has completed 15 of 24 passes in the preseason for 193 yards and a touchdown. ``Offensively, we've made some strides, but you have to go going up against our defense every day in practice. That's a chore in itself.'' Culpepper faces that task Thursday and Rucker is happy he'll be suiting up after last year's ugly injury in Charlotte. ``You've got a big dude who weighs just about as much you do, and he's fast and can throw the ball,'' Rucker said. ``He has all the tools you would want in a great quarterback. Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC. The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game. For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft. Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.
1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign? New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1. Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT. Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season. With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round. LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems. If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season. The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach. The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub. High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career. With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season. The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age. It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot. This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.

Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
