Choice, Georgia Tech stomp Samford

NCAA Football Betting Lines

09/08/2007 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tashard Choice rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns, part of a Yellow Jacket rushing attack that gained 389 yards on the ground, as No. 21 Georgia Tech had no trouble in a 69-14 victory over Samford.

One week after lighting up Notre Dame for a career-high 196 yards and two scores, Choice was at it again with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Jonathan Dwyer ran for 71 yards and a pair of scores in relief of the star back. Taylor Bennett was an efficient 8-of-9 for 85 yards as the Yellow Jackets (2-0) rolled from the outset.

Jefferson Adcock completed just 7-of-19 passes for 45 yards and Chris Evans ran for 49 yards in the loss. Samford (1-1) recorded only 240 total yards to 498 for Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard by following the same offensive blueprint that worked wonders last Saturday in South Bend.

After a 25-yard punt return set Georgia Tech up deep in Samford territory, Bennett threw a screen to Choice for 17 yards down to the Bulldogs 18-yard line. On 4th-and-1 from just inside the 10-yard line, Choice followed his fullback off guard and used a quick cutback to skate almost untouched into the end zone for the eight-yard score.

Georgia Tech's offense stayed on the field on two more fourth downs during its second possession. The 12-play, 61-yard drive featured plenty of Choice but was highlighted by a defensive penalty and a pair of fourth down conversions.

On 4th-and-1 from the Samford 31-yard line, Choice slashed through a gaping hole for 10 yards. On the next third down, Bennett was in trouble and about to go down well short of the marker but Jason Gaines yanked down the quarterback by the facemask for a major infraction and an automatic first down.

Bennett finally snuck into the end zone on 4th-and-goal from inside the one- yard line for a 14-0 advantage with 4:12 remaining in the quarter.

The points kept coming on GT's next possession, this time a quick-hitter instead of the previous two methodical marches. Choice slipped past the first line of defense and outran the secondary for a 73-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

Georgia Tech continued to pour it on with two more touchdowns to take a 35-0 advantage. Dwyer sprinted 40 yards for a score on the first play of a possession and Greg Smith's six-yard plunge off a lateral with 10:39 left in the half pushed the edge to five touchdowns.

Travis Bell booted through a 21-yard chip shot for a 38-0 lead and Jamaal Evans' six-yard burst with 3:08 left in the half increased the advantage to 45-0. Dwyer's 19-yard run with 12:50 remaining in the third period made the score 52-0, as the Yellow Jackets began resting most of their starters.

Another Bell field goal, this one from 31 yards out, made the score 55-0, and Dwyer's 65-yard jaunt increased the lead to 62-0 with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter.

Samford finally got on the scoreboard near the end of the third quarter when Alex Barnett scampered into the end zone from four yards out. Georgia Tech answered when Jason Davis ran for a five-yard score with 9:59 remaining in the contest.

Adcock found Jeff Moore for a 34-yard touchdown connection late in the fourth to close out the scoring.

Game Notes

Chan Gailey was the head coach at Samford during the 1993 season...Georgia Tech has won all eight meetings between the schools...Choice led the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing last season.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.

As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.

Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds

The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.

Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).

But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.

Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.

Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1

Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2

New York Giants - 9 - 2

Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).

Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.

So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.

They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.

Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.

But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.

Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.

Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.

Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.

Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?

Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.

In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.

Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.

Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.

The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.

The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.
